Nonprofit Quarterly. Nonprofit Quarterly is committed to providing a forum for the critical thinking and exploration needed to help nonprofits stay true to this democratic calling—and to achieve their potential as effective, powerful, and influential organizations in concert with their constituencies. Excellent resource for contemporary issues across a number of policy areas.

National Center for Charitable Statistics. A project of the Urban Institute, the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) is the national repository of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States. Its mission is to develop and disseminate high quality data on nonprofit organizations and their activities for use in research on the relationships between the nonprofit sector, government, the commercial sector, and the broader civil society.

Guidestar. This website gathers and publicizes information about nonprofit organizations:  “Our reach is far and wide. Our database is broad and deep.” One function of Guidestar’s extensive database is access to recent IRS 990 forms from almost every nonprofit organization in the United States (some small organizations are not required to file a 990).  Students should familiarize themselves with Guidestar for both class assignments and independent research.

The Foundation Center. The Center issues a wide variety of print, electronic, and online information resources; conducts and publishes research on trends in foundation growth, giving, and practice; and offers an array of free and affordable educational programs.  The University of Oregon Library has a subscription to the Foundation Directory Online Professional, the most comprehensive database on U.S. grantmakers and their grants.

Chronicle of Philanthropy. The Chronicle provides news and information for executives of tax-exempt organizations in health, education, religion, the arts, social services, and other fields, as well as fundraisers, professional employees of foundations, institutional investors, corporate grant makers, and charity donors. Along with news, it offers such service features as lists of grants, fundraising ideas and techniques, statistics, reports on tax and court rulings, summaries of books, and a calendar of events.

Chronicle of Philanthropy: Blogs. The Chronicle has recently added an online community component featuring eight blogs by the nation’s top nonprofit professionals and researchers.

FLiP. Future Leaders in Philanthropy (FLiP) is a blog dedicated to creating a community and a network where emerging nonprofit leaders can meet, learn, exchange ideas, and contribute to each other’s success.

Nonprofit Leadership 601. An excellent blog by Heather Carpenter covering nonprofit leadership, nonprofit careers, the nonprofit workforce, nonprofit technology, and nonprofit management education.

Philantopic.  “A blog of opinion and commentary from Philanthropy News Digest.”

Rosetta Thurman.  Thurman is an emerging voice representing both young leadership and diversity in the nonprofit sector.  She is a prolific writer, speaker, professor and consultant who has been featured in articles about the nonprofit sector in the Washington Post, Nonprofit Quarterly, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Nonprofit Consultant Blog.   Ken Goldstein has been working in nonprofits and local government agencies since 1989. His many years of senior management experience includes executive director and regional director positions, as well as consulting an serving on nonprofit boards. A great example of a nonprofit blogger with unique voice and perspective.
